The irony is that we are.Īs ridiculously affluent and privileged our family was, we were infinitely more dysfunctional (I was telling people when I was in high school that we were "the most dressed up and the most messed up" family) and destructive. the ‘joke’ is that we are the best and worst of Europe in one family. On the Danish side we were titled (we got our noble title/crest sometime in the 12 thĬentury) many years ago by the Crown (we are also related to the Danish Royal family, though distantly) for breeding the Great Dane breed of dogs (there is a lot of ‘local mythology’ that we made the breed much of what it is today, but I suspect it was more like we just bred the best dogs), and on the Swiss side we have Romansch Gypsy.

Most of our family was new to the United States (shortly before and after WWII). My family was the 9 th largest privately owned farm corporation in Iowa when I was growing up – we (the family corp) owned tens of thousands of acres of land, and were worth 10’s of millions in land alone at the lowest point of land values during the "Farm Crisis" in the 80’s.
